"What good is all the medical science in the world in extending life if it is not accompanied by an acceptable quality of life for a broad number of people and nations?"

Medical Research

  • The Foundation shall encourage and support medical breakthroughs and other accomplishments that improve the quality of human life as opposed to mere increases in longevity, closing the ever increasing gap between length of life and quality of life.

  • The Foundation shall encourage and support translational therapeutic work in improving medical care with an emphasis on short-term and long-term memory loss.

Music

  • The Foundation shall encourage and support the performance and understanding of classical music, romantic music, and 19th and early 20th century Russian music. The term “classical music” means the music written in the countries of western Europe (including the Austro-Hungarian empire) in the 17th and 18th Centuries typified by such composers as Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Vivaldi. The term “romantic music” means the music written in the countries of western Europe (including the Austro-Hungarian empire), western Russia (including the Ukraine) and the United States in the 19th Century and typified by the composers Beethoven, Shubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Liszt and Mahler.

The term “19th and early 20th Century Russian music” means the music written by Russian-born composers during the 19th Century and continuing until 1950 and typified by the composers Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. It was Dr. Pearce’s intention to encourage traditional, conservative interpretations of this music and to recognize performances, educational programs and individuals that promote these interpretations.

  • The Foundation shall encourage and support the performance and understanding of grand opera. For this purpose, the term “grand opera” means operas written in the countries of western Europe (including the Austro-Hungarian empire), western Russia (including the Ukraine) and the United States in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The composers whose works shall be considered part of grand opera include (but shall not be limited to) Wagner, Verdi, Puccini (including those works written by him in the 20th Century), Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Bizet, Gounod, Dvorák and Lehár (operettas).

It was Dr. Pearce’s intention to encourage traditional, conservative interpretations of these works – and to concentrate on those composers and operas that, over time, have generally been recognized for their quality and excellence and to recognize performances, productions, educational programs and individuals that promote appreciation of and access to these interpretations, composers and operas.
